At schools (and even at home) it is not possible for the students to get individual attention. So they join private classes. However, these private classes are nothing more than classrooms. In such conditions how can one learn and prepare for exams? Ultimately the student has to self-study. Parents face difficulties in guiding their children especially beyond 8th Std not just due to lack of time but also other factors like the changes in syllabus (which parents may not be familiar with) as well as the psychological changes in students due to their young-adulthood age.Even if parents want to guide the kids, the kids themselves may no longer want to study with their parents and may wish just to be left alone.
Self Study can be a good way to overcome such difficulties. Just asking students "did you study?" or "how long did you study?" is not enough. These are vague questions and there is no way to quantify the efforts. Instead, a parent can ask the students to solve the question papers from study pattern and ask "How many papers of how many subjects have you solved?". At the same time, from the examined answer sheets that are returned clearly showing how the student did, the parents can see exactly where the student stands and what efforts are necessary to improve their performance. It is also a relatively hands-off approach for both, the parents and the students, providing breathing space for both. In Self Study at Home, a student is offered four unit question papers for each subject. Each subject's textbook is divided into four equal parts. One unit generally covers three to four lessons. The student is expected to solve the question papers at home by referring to the textbook. He can also use all the educational material available (such as study material) as well as guidance of his teachers. This is a deliberate process. First, the student should try to understand the question itself and then find out its answer from the books. This open book system is compulsory. This system includes reading, comprehending and writing, all of which are important aspects of self study. This method of study is quite relevant to latest syllabus. New syllabus is based on constructive approach. (student has to study by his own.)
Although the question paper is solved by referring to books, there still can be a few shortcomings. In order to get things hundred percent correct, the student (anywhere in Maharashtra) should send the solved question papers to our office. There the papers are evaluated and moderated by a team of expert teachers. The evaluated papers are then returned to the student along with remarks, instructions and model answers. It shows the student what mistakes he has committed and why the marks are cut. The process adheres to the state Board's final exam pattern. For students, this will help gain more confidence and simulate the experience of taking the state Board's exam.
